Butterfly Weed Seed

Butterfly Weed (Asclepias Tuberosa) : An extremely hardy, long lived perennial native to North America. The bright orange flowers are concentrated in compact clusters at the top of branching stems. Blooms early summer to late fall. The flowers produce a large quantity of nectar which attracts butterflies throughout the
growing season. Requires a very well drained soil in full sun. Grows 2' to 3' tall and 2' to 3' wide. Monarch butterfly larvae and swallowtail butterfly larvae feed on its leaves but seldom harm the plant. It is slow to emerge in the spring, so mark its location to avoid accidental digging. It does not do well when transplanted. If you don't want it to spread, deadhead faded blooms before seed pods mature. It is sometimes called orange milkweed because it produces a milky sap when cut. It is one of the showiest native wildflowers.
